The outlook for Xiaomi’s compact foldable lineup is looking less certain, and the biggest warning sign now points to the Mix Flip series. Reports suggest that Xiaomi has halted development of the Mix Flip, which makes the arrival of a third generation appear increasingly unlikely.
The discussion gained traction after a post circulating on Weibo drew a direct response from tipster Digital Chat Station. Asked whether Xiaomi would launch a new compact foldable this year, the response was brief but decisive: Xiaomi had stopped working on the Mix Flip line.
That statement quickly fueled speculation among tech watchers, especially because the Mix Flip had stood out as one of Xiaomi’s more notable compact foldables. Xiaomi itself has not issued any official confirmation, so the company’s final direction could still change.
If the development pause proves accurate, the move fits a broader reality in the foldable market. Flip-style phones continue to attract attention for their design, but the segment remains much smaller than the conventional smartphone market.
Production costs are also still high, particularly for foldables in the flip category. Those costs push retail prices upward, while consumer demand remains selective, making the business case harder to scale.
A cautious market, not just a Xiaomi issue
Xiaomi is not the only brand moving carefully in this segment. Honor has not shown signs of continuing its flip lineup after the Honor V Flip 2, and Vivo has followed a similar pattern with the X Flip series.
Oppo has also remained quiet since releasing the Find N3 Flip in 2023. The lack of clear follow-up models from multiple brands adds to the impression that the flip category is still waiting for a stronger moment.
Motorola, however, appears to be taking a different path. The company has recently launched several devices at once, including the Razr 70, Razr 70+, and Razr 70 Ultra.
That more aggressive rollout suggests Motorola still sees room for growth in compact foldables. It also sets the brand apart from rivals that seem more reluctant to expand the category quickly.
Xiaomi may shift attention elsewhere
A stop in Mix Flip development would not mean Xiaomi is leaving foldables behind. Instead, the company is expected to focus more heavily on horizontal book-style foldables.
That form factor is viewed as more practical for productivity and multitasking. It is also considered to have a steadier market than flip-style devices.
Rumors indicate that Xiaomi is preparing a new horizontal foldable for launch around July or August 2026. The device is also said to feature Xiaomi’s next proprietary chipset, the Xring O3.
If that timeline and hardware prove accurate, Xiaomi’s priorities may be shifting toward the segment it sees as more commercially promising. For Mix Flip fans, that leaves little room for optimism about a third model in the compact foldable line.
