Apple Takes the Top Three, Samsung’s Galaxy A Lineup Pushes Xiaomi Aside In Global Sales

The global smartphone market in the first quarter of 2026 was unusually concentrated at the top, with just 10 models accounting for 25 percent of worldwide unit sales. That was described as the highest first-quarter concentration ever recorded, and it shows how sharply demand has narrowed around a small group of familiar devices.

Apple benefited the most from that pattern. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Pro took the top three spots worldwide, giving Apple a clean sweep of the podium and reinforcing its strength in the premium segment.

Apple’s standard model outpaced the Pro tier

The most notable result was the iPhone 17 itself, which finished first ahead of both Pro models. Counterpoint said the regular version continued to outperform its predecessor because of a higher base storage option, improved camera resolution, and a display refresh rate that moved closer to the Pro variants.

Those changes appear to have widened the device’s appeal beyond the usual flagship audience. For Apple, that means a standard model is now delivering the kind of scale that can support both volume and profitability at the same time.

Samsung’s strength came from Galaxy A, not Galaxy S

While Apple dominated the top three, Samsung placed the most models in the top 10 overall. All five of Samsung’s entries came from the Galaxy A lineup: Galaxy A07 4G, Galaxy A17 5G, Galaxy A56, Galaxy A36, and Galaxy A17 4G.

Galaxy A07 4G ranked fourth and became the best-selling Android smartphone of the quarter. The result underlines Samsung’s reach in mid-range and entry-level categories, where value and broad availability remain decisive.

At the same time, no Galaxy S model made the top 10. That points to a very different picture for Samsung’s flagship line, even though Counterpoint noted that Galaxy S26 Ultra came close to entering the list.

Xiaomi held on with a single entry

Xiaomi had only one device in the ranking: Redmi A5 in 10th place. It was also identified as the most affordable phone in the top 10, which makes its presence notable in a list otherwise dominated by higher-profile flagship and upper-midrange devices.

Counterpoint said Redmi A5 reflected continued demand in multiple emerging markets. That position matters because it shows that the low-end segment still has room for strong performers, even as competition intensifies across the broader smartphone market.

The overall picture from the first quarter suggests a market drifting toward two poles. Buyers appear to be concentrating around premium phones that have already proven popular, while also gravitating toward entry-level devices that offer the strongest value.

For now, Apple leads the premium side with iPhone 17 at the front of the pack, Samsung counters with volume through Galaxy A, and Xiaomi remains in the mix through Redmi A5. The result is a top 10 that reveals less fragmentation and more concentration than usual.
