Wednesday’s Storm Threat Could Turn Dangerous, Damaging Winds And Flash Flooding Loom

Author: Qoo Media

Wednesday is a First Alert Weather Day across the Tri-State as widespread rain moves in and some storms could turn severe. The FOX19 NOW Weather Team says the main concerns are damaging winds, flash flooding, and a lower-end threat for hail or an isolated tornado.

A Slight Risk, or 2 out of 5, is in place across the region. Heavy rain began around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday and is expected to continue into the afternoon, creating difficult driving conditions through much of the day.

Flash flooding remains a major concern

The weather team says damaging wind is the primary severe threat, but flash flooding may be just as important. Additional rain falling on already-saturated ground could lead to ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas.

A Flood Advisory has already been issued for part of the area, and officials are urging caution on the roads. Slow runoff can make standing water more likely, especially during the morning commute and into the midday hours.

A cold front is moving into the Tri-State Wednesday morning and is expected to keep showers going through the rest of the day. Rain may increase around noon, and steady showers are expected to continue through Wednesday afternoon.

What to expect through the day

The weather team says one or two strong storms are possible as the system moves through. Even so, the bigger issue may be the long duration of rain rather than isolated storm strength.

That setup means travel could stay messy for several hours, with wet roads and reduced visibility. Drivers are advised to allow extra time and stay alert for changing conditions, especially in areas prone to flooding.

Improvement arrives Thursday

Conditions should dry out Thursday, and temperatures will feel more comfortable. Highs are expected to reach the mid-to-upper 60s, offering a short break after Wednesday’s wet weather.

That calmer stretch may not last long, though. Scattered storms are expected to return Friday, with highs warming into the 70s and another round of rain concerns possible.

How to stay prepared

Keep an umbrella close for Wednesday’s morning commute, especially if travel is unavoidable. It is also important to keep checking forecasts from Friday through Sunday for updated rain and flooding concerns.

The FOX19 NOW Weather Team says the combination of repeated rain and already wet ground could keep flooding risks elevated, so conditions may change quickly as the week continues.
