Ann-Margret’s Bob Mackie Gown Worn By Sabrina Carpenter Heads To Auction, A Rare Hollywood Time Capsule

A gown once worn by Hollywood star Ann-Margret and later seen on Sabrina Carpenter will go under the hammer next month. The Bob Mackie design is part of a wider auction of the actress’s wardrobe and personal memorabilia at Julien’s Auctions in California.

The black satin and nude silk gown with a black overlay first appeared when Ann-Margret presented the 49th annual Academy Awards. Carpenter wore it again during Dame Anna Wintour’s Met Gala dinner earlier this year and also for a rehearsal with Stevie Nicks before the fashion event.

A dress with two eras of star power

The dress is expected to fetch up to 3,000 dollars (£2,232). It stands out as one of the key items in a sale that reflects both Ann-Margret’s screen legacy and the continuing appeal of her style.

Ann-Margret, born Ann-Margret Olsson, built a career across film, television and music after rising to fame in the 1960s as a dancer. She is now 85 and is known for roles in films including Viva Las Vegas with Elvis Presley, Bye Bye Birdie, Carnal Knowledge and Grumpy Old Men.

Other red-carpet and stage looks in the sale

The auction also includes another gown Ann-Margret wore while presenting the 52nd annual Academy Awards in 1980. That silk jersey dress with clear sequins and a peach pleated overlay is also estimated at up to 3,000 dollars (£2,232).

A black dress she wore when collecting a Golden Globe for her performance in Tommy is expected to sell for around 2,000 dollars (£1,489). Another film-related piece, the silk jersey gown worn in her award-winning role as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, carries an estimate of 600 to 800 dollars (£446 to £595).

The collection also features a leotard costume with an American flag pattern, worn for a musical performance during President Gerald Ford’s state dinner honoring the Shah of Iran. That item is estimated at 1,000 to 2,000 dollars (£744 to £1,489).

Scripts, jewellery and a motorcycle

Beyond clothing, the sale includes scripts from some of Ann-Margret’s biggest films. Her script for Pocketful of Miracles, her breakout role from 1961, is expected to bring up to 5,000 dollars (£3,724), while her Bye Bye Birdie script is estimated at 4,000 to 6,000 dollars (£2,979 to £4,469).

The auction also offers a custom painted 1997 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883 Hugger motorcycle, which could fetch 10,000 to 15,000 dollars (£7,449 to £11,174). Ann-Margret is known as an avid motorcyclist and collector, adding another layer to the range of items being sold.

Other highlights include a brown silk gown and matching jacket worn on The Tonight Show in 1975, a fur coat worn to the New York premiere of Tommy, stage bodysuits, magazine cover pieces and jewellery such as an 18 karat yellow-gold diamond spray brooch from the 1960s.

How the bidding will work

The sale will be held on June 23 and will include bidding through Julien’s Auctions’ website, by telephone, in person or by absentee bid. Catherine Williamson, managing director of entertainment at Julien’s Auctions, described the collection as especially striking this season and said it honors “Hollywood legend Ann-Margret.”

The auction brings together clothing, scripts and personal items tied to a performer whose career spans decades, while the Ann-Margret gown later worn by Sabrina Carpenter is likely to draw particular attention from both film and fashion collectors.
