Spain’s Social Security has confirmed that some retirees with children can increase their pension through the gender gap reduction supplement. This extra payment is added to certain contributory pensions and is designed to offset the career impact that child care may have had.
In 2026, the supplement stands at 36.90 euros per month for each child, up to a maximum of four. That means the increase can reach 36.90 euros with one child, 73.80 euros with two, 110.70 euros with three, and 147.60 euros a month with four or more children.
Who can receive the supplement
Not every pensioner qualifies for this extra amount. The benefit is linked to contributory retirement, permanent disability, or widow’s pensions, and it is granted only when the applicant meets the conditions set by Social Security.
In general, women are the main recipients because the rule was created to address the impact that child care often had on their working lives. Men can also apply, but they must prove that their professional path was affected by the birth or adoption of their children, under the terms set by the regulation.
One benefit per family unit
The supplement is not paid to both parents at the same time. If both meet the requirements, Social Security awards it to the person with the lower pension.
This detail matters because the payment can make a noticeable difference in monthly income. For many retirees, even a modest increase can improve the final amount received every month.
How the payment is made
The supplement does not replace part of the pension. It is paid on top of the regular contributory pension and is included in 14 instalments, in the same way as many Spanish pensions.
The key point is that the benefit must be requested. Some retirees may not have it recognized simply because they never applied for it or were unaware that they were eligible.
Pensioners with children are therefore advised to check whether they meet the Social Security criteria. The supplement is not universal, but for eligible beneficiaries it can add between 36.90 euros and 147.60 euros per month in 2026, depending on the number of recognised children and the specific personal situation.
