Xbox Says The Elder Scrolls 6 Is Coming Along Well, But The Wait Still Feels Endless

The Elder Scrolls 6 remains one of gaming’s biggest long waits, and Xbox is still not ready to put a public date on it. In a new interview with Variety, Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty said Bethesda has been showing progress internally, but that the game will only be revealed when the timing is right.

That matters because the sequel to Skyrim was announced eight years ago and has barely been seen since. Fans were hoping for another appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase last week, but the game was once again absent.

What Xbox Is Saying Now

Booty said he has visited Bethesda and watched The Elder Scrolls 6 being played, adding that it is “coming along well.” He also suggested that when Bethesda finally shows the game publicly, that reveal should come close to release.

“I would say one of the more challenging balancing acts of someone in a job like mine is balancing that you want to go show the world all the cool stuff you’re working on, and you want to get them excited early, but we also know that we want to wait till the right moment,” Booty said.

He added, “And when you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got. And also that when you show the game, you’re also giving them a promise of, hey, it’s coming soon. So I can tell you, having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen Elder Scrolls playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time.”

Todd Howard Keeps Warning Fans To Be Patient

Bethesda game director Todd Howard has repeatedly stressed that the game is still far away. He said last November that it was “still a long way off,” and in February he said “it’s gonna be a while yet” while confirming that the majority of the studio is on the game and that Bethesda is close to a big internal milestone.

Howard has also argued that the long wait is part of making the game worthy of the name. In December, he compared the process to keeping a turkey in the oven long enough to come out delicious, saying Bethesda will take its time “as long as it needs to be great.”

For now, the main message from Xbox and Bethesda is simple: The Elder Scrolls 6 is progressing, but the public still has no clear timeline for a reveal. Until that changes, the game remains a rare sequel that can dominate conversation even when it is nowhere to be seen.
