Mountain Dew’s 5-Cent Commemorative Can Drop Turns Its 1948 Origin Story Into a Collector’s Deal

Mountain Dew is leaning hard into its 1948 roots with a limited run that is as nostalgic as it is unusually cheap. The brand will sell 1,948 commemorative can bundles for $0.05 each, with the drop limited to one per person on TikTok Shop.

The release ties directly to the company’s “American Original – Tasting Great Since ’48” campaign, which has been highlighting the brand’s Tennessee origin story across social and digital media this spring. The commemorative can is designed to echo that history and includes printed details about the brand’s beginnings.

The bundles will be released in three waves on June 29, June 30 and July 1. According to Mountain Dew, quantities for each day will be announced at noon ET on Mountain Dew Instagram Stories, and the drop is exclusive to TikTok Shop.

Why the can matters to the brand

Mountain Dew said the promotion is meant to celebrate nearly 80 years as an American Original and bring the brand’s origin story to life for fans. The can bundle follows a spring creative spot called Big Spender, which helped inspire the commemorative design.

“Since 1948, Mountain Dew has been defined by bold spirit, unrelentless grit and ambitious energy — qualities that continue to drive the brand forward today,” said Michael Smith, VP of Marketing for Mountain Dew, PepsiCo Beverages U.S. “This commemorative can is about bringing that origin story to life, paying homage to our roots as an American Original and giving fans a meaningful way to celebrate Dew history.”

The campaign behind the release

The broader “American Original – Tasting Great Since ’48” platform launched in April and includes four creative spots: Big Spender, Hoedown, Cold Ones and In the Mix. Each one is meant to reflect the grit, independence and citrus kick tied to Mountain Dew’s Tennessee beginnings.

Mountain Dew is directing fans to follow @MountainDew on TikTok for updates as the drop goes live. The company’s parent, PepsiCo, says its products are enjoyed more than one billion times a day in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
