Billy Coyle’s career is built on a simple idea: defend hard, keep going, and never lose sight of family. In a profile for okcfriday.com, the criminal defense attorney described a life shaped by Oklahoma City roots, Florida childhood years, and a strong pull toward the courtroom.
He was born in Oklahoma City, but spent much of his childhood in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he graduated from Fort Lauderdale High in 1993. Even after moving away young, he kept returning to Oklahoma City for holidays and summer visits, carrying memories of 1980s childhood trips, music, and movies with him.
A Family Practice That Became His Own
Coyle said his father, JW, was already a well-known criminal defense lawyer and set the example early. After earning a finance degree from Florida State University and spending a year at Morgan Stanley, he realized he wanted to follow that path and moved back to Oklahoma more than two decades ago to study law.
He attended both Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma Schools of Law. The legal profession now runs through the family in more than one way, with his wife also a lawyer and his children saying they want to become lawyers too.
What Drives Him In Court
Coyle said the work he enjoys most is defending people and challenging the government. He told okcfriday.com that he tried nine jury trials over the last year and has grown more committed to the work as he has gotten older.
That commitment is tied to a view of criminal defense as a serious responsibility. He said trying cases is difficult and noted that the presumption of innocence can be overshadowed by an assumption of guilt before he gets the chance to help.
Success, Home Life, And Daily Routine
For Coyle, success is not defined by titles or courtroom wins. He said success is family, and pointed to his wife, Oklahoma County District Judge Heather Coyle, and their three children, Jack, Lilly, and Lilah.
He lives in Nichols Hills and works downtown on Park Avenue, where he said he typically wakes up around 6:30 a.m., puts on a suit, and goes to court. He described that daily court appearance as an honor and privilege, especially because he sees himself as representing people during some of the hardest moments of their lives.
Marine Training, Sports Heroes, And Long-Term Goals
One of the most important influences in his life came at 18, when he enlisted in the United States Marine Reserves and went to Parris Island, South Carolina for boot camp. He said the recruiter’s warning about the challenge lit a fire that has never gone out, and the experience gave him a lasting sense of discipline.
He also said he would like to have grandkids one day and takes inspiration from watching his father help raise his children. Among his sports heroes, he mentioned Barry Switzer and Bobby Bowden, describing both men as powerful figures in his life, with Switzer standing out for his charm and Bowden for leading the dominant Florida State teams of the 1990s.
When asked how he would like to be remembered, Coyle kept it brief: someone who worked hard, played hard, and loved his family. He also framed Theodore Roosevelt’s words on his wall and still follows advice from his father not to worry about making the prosecutor angry, but to stay aggressive for the client.
