Alex Eala made a sharp return to Wimbledon, and the 21-year-old did it with authority. She beat Renata Zarazúa 6-1, 6-2 to reach the second round and record her first victory on the lawns of the All England Club.

The result also gave Eala just the second Grand Slam main-draw win of her career. According to www.espn.com, it came after her breakthrough three-set victory over Clara Tauson at the 2025 US Open and offered quick revenge against Zarazúa, who had beaten her at the 2024 ITF Cary Tennis Classic.

How Eala Took Control Early

Eala set the tone immediately by holding at love in the opening game and breaking in the fourth game to move ahead 3-1 in the first set. She stayed composed through the most difficult stretch of the opener and eventually converted her second break of the match on her 10th break-point chance.

That second break pushed her to 5-1, and she served out the opening set without losing momentum. From there, the match never really shifted back in Zarazúa’s favor.

Why The Match Tilted So Cleanly

The Filipina’s aggressive baseline game kept Zarazúa from settling in, especially on return. Eala won 20 first-serve return points, while Zarazúa managed only six, a gap that helped the 29th seed control rallies from the start.

Eala also led 8-2 in second-serve points won, repeatedly stepping inside the baseline and taking time away from her opponent. That pressure showed in the second set, where she broke in the second game to build a 2-0 lead and then added another three-game surge to move within sight of victory.

Zarazúa did get on the board in the second set, but Eala kept dictating from the baseline and protected her lead with steady serving. Both players held the rest of the way before Eala closed out the match in a composed service game.

She will next face Maya Joint in a rematch of their 2025 Eastbourne final. Joint advanced after beating Serena Williams 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in the American’s long-awaited return to singles action.
