South China’s flood situation has worsened quickly in Nanning, where a reservoir has already faced a serious emergency and the city lifted its flood emergency response to Level 1. Heavy rain linked to Typhoon “Maysak” has driven water levels up across rivers and reservoirs, pushing local authorities into their highest alert posture.
According to news.china.com, Nanning raised its flood response from Level 3 to Level 1 at 11:30 a.m. on July 6 after days of intense rainfall triggered severe flooding pressure across much of the city. The warning comes as several rivers are expected to rise further in the next 1 to 2 days.
Reservoir Risk and Rising Rivers
Since July 4, most parts of Nanning have seen rain ranging from heavy to torrential, with some areas recording extremely heavy rainfall. The fast-rising water has already created serious risks at a reservoir, underscoring how quickly the situation has escalated.
At the same time, the Guangxi Water Resources Department upgraded its flood defense response from Level 3 to Level 2 at 8 a.m. on July 6 and issued an orange flood warning. Officials said the Yujiang River and its tributaries, including Qingjiang, Sitang River, and Xinjiang River, are expected to keep rising.
| River Or Section | Expected Change | Time Window | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xinjiang River | About 5.5 meters above warning level | Within 6 to 20 hours | Xinjiang Town, Yongning District |
| Qingjiang River | About 3.9 meters above warning level | Within 6 to 20 hours | Longtang Town, Qingxiu District |
| Lingli River | About 2.5 meters above warning level | Within 6 to 20 hours | Lingli Town, Qingxiu District |
| Sitang River | About 1.3 meters above warning level | Within 6 to 20 hours | Pheonix Valley section, SanTang Town, Xingning District |
| Liangfeng River | About 0.5 meters above warning level | Within 6 to 20 hours | Gaoling Village section, Jiangnan District |
Flood Peak Still Building
Nanning Water Resources and Hydrology officials expect the Yujiang River section through the city to see a flood rise of 1 to 2 meters within the next 1 to 2 days. The current flood began exceeding the 69.4-meter design protection level at 10 a.m. on July 6.
The city is also preparing for a numbered flood on the Yujiang River. That adds to concerns across Guangxi, where many rivers have already surpassed warning levels.
From 8 a.m. on July 5 to 8 a.m. on July 6, heavy rain hit several cities in Guangxi, including Nanning, Qinzhou, Guigang, Fangchenggang, Beihai, Yulin, Laibin, Liuzhou, and Guilin. The heaviest daily rainfall reached 637.0 millimeters in Luwei Town, Binyang County, Nanning.
In total, 65 rivers and 82 monitoring stations across Guangxi were above warning level, with the largest exceedance recorded on a Yujiang tributary in Luwei Town. The latest alerts show that the threat is no longer limited to one reservoir or one river, but part of a much wider flood emergency across the region.
