Eigelsbach’s Wimbledon Rebound Stands Out, Wobker Is Disqualified After Racquet Throw

Germany’s junior girls had a mixed opening at Wimbledon, but Emily Eigelsbach produced the result that stood out most. The Rhineland-Palatinate player avenged her recent loss to India’s Maaya Rajeshwaran, while Ida Wobker was disqualified after a racquet throw went wrong in the second set.

For Eigelsbach, the grass courts brought a very different match from the one in Bamberg only a few weeks ago. There, Rajeshwaran had beaten her at the ITF German Juniors before going on to win the title.

Eigelsbach Turns The Tables

On Wimbledon’s faster surface, the 17-year-old stayed in the match from the start and held her nerve in the closing stages of the first set. She then took control with a varied game in the second set and won 7-5, 6-2 after 1 hour and 40 minutes.

According to www.tennisnet.com, the German from Bad Kreuznach will next face either Latvian Adelina Lacinova or American qualifier Emery Combs in the second round.

Wobker’s Match Ends In A Disqualification

Ida Wobker’s afternoon against Romania’s Maria Pop ended in frustration. After losing the first set without winning a game, she improved sharply and kept the match open with her pace.

At 5-5 and 30-0 for Pop in the second set, Wobker reacted to a long backhand by throwing her racquet onto the grass, and it bounced high before landing in the spectators’ seats.

The incident brought an immediate disqualification for the Lower Saxony player, closing out a difficult start for the German junior girls in Wimbledon.
