President Donald Trump has recommended Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of Sen. Lindsey Graham, to serve as an interim replacement in Graham’s South Carolina Senate seat. Trump said on Truth Social that she would be “a fabulous tribute” to her brother, who died suddenly over the weekend.
The move puts the decision in the hands of Gov. Henry McMaster, who can appoint a temporary replacement under state law. Because Graham was up for reelection this year, his death also triggers a sprint primary election to decide who will appear on the November ballot.
McMaster’s Choice Carries Immediate Political Weight
McMaster has scheduled a 4 p.m. ET press conference to announce his pick. The governor and Trump are longtime allies, and Trump has publicly tied earlier South Carolina decisions to McMaster’s political position.

A Family Link That Has Long Been Public
Graham and Nordone have been close throughout their lives, according to a 2015 CNN interview in which she described him as a caregiver during their childhood. She said their parents worked long hours running a small business, and that her brother stepped into a protective role early on.
The siblings grew up in a single room behind the Sanitary Cafe in Central, South Carolina, where their parents ran a bar, pool hall and liquor store. After both parents died within 15 months of each other, Darline became orphaned at 13 in 1976.
Graham later became her legal guardian, which allowed her to access his military benefits. Nordone told CNN in 2015 that being adopted by her brother felt “a little odd” at first, but that it later made perfect sense.
“I knew he was doing what he could to take care of me, and it was best for us,” she said.
Other Names Could Still Enter The Race
McMaster is term-limited and cannot seek reelection this year, adding another layer to the state’s political scramble. Trump also floated McMaster’s son, Henry McMaster Jr., as a possible lieutenant governor pick earlier this year, though he declined the consideration.
A source familiar with the matter told CNN that South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette was fielding calls about entering the race for Graham’s seat. Other possible candidates for the special primary election include Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman.
The choice now sits with McMaster, but the ripple effects extend beyond the temporary appointment. South Carolina Republicans are already looking ahead to a fast-moving contest for the seat on the November ballot.
