Mia Goth’s stark post-apocalyptic thriller The Survivalist is set to return to free streaming on Aug. 1. The 2015 film offers a very different side of the actor best known for her later work in Ti West’s X trilogy.
Set after a catastrophic population collapse, the R-rated drama follows a man surviving alone in the woods as food and basic resources become desperately scarce. His carefully protected isolation ends when two starving women arrive at his land seeking help.
A Fragile Deal Drives the Film’s Tension
Martin McCann plays the unnamed Survivalist, who safeguards his remote home with traps, alarms, and constant vigilance. Olwen Fouéré plays Kathryn, while Goth plays her daughter, Milja, a young woman whose compassion survives even as the world around her has become brutal.
With nothing else to offer in exchange for food, Kathryn proposes Milja as payment for basic necessities. The Survivalist accepts reluctantly, but the arrangement creates a tense household shaped by fear, jealousy, and shifting loyalty.
The film keeps the cause of its global disaster unexplained and uses minimal dialogue to intensify its isolated setting. Sudden bursts of violence stand in contrast to its restrained, intimate approach to survival.

Critical Recognition Came Before Goth’s Horror Breakout
The Survivalist premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2015 and later received a limited theatrical release. It grossed just under $57,000 worldwide, but Goth earned a British Independent Film Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer.
The film holds a 96% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. As reported by movieweb.com, critics have described it as “original and stunning” as well as “eerie and masterful.”
Before Goth became closely associated with X, Pearl, and MaXXXine, her screen work also included A Cure for Wellness, Suspiria, and Emma. The Survivalist remains one of her earlier dramatic performances, centered on restraint rather than the heightened horror that later made her a genre standout.

The movie is currently available behind the AMC+ paywall in the United States. On Aug. 1, it will join Tubi’s free, ad-supported streaming library.
Tubi’s incoming slate also includes Zodiac, the Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour franchises, Eyes Wide Shut, and Mission: Impossible. Goth can also be seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and she is expected to appear in Star Wars: Starfighter, scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.
