A 25-year-old Marine drill instructor assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island was found dead at a residence in Port Royal, South Carolina, on Friday. The cause of Sgt. Darilyn C. Duong’s death remains under investigation.
Duong was assigned to the Recruit Training Regiment’s 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, according to the Marine Corps. Officials have not released further information about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Service at Parris Island
Duong was originally from Winnebago, Nebraska, WRDW reported. Her role placed her within the recruit training organization at Parris Island, the Marine Corps installation in the Port Royal area.
Her military awards and decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with two awards, and the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation. She also received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with two awards and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
In a statement, the Marine Corps said, “The Marine Corps extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow Marines affected by this loss.” The investigation into Duong’s cause of death is ongoing.
