Authorities in Florida have charged a man from Ocala with murder following the death of a British woman who traveled to the United States seeking to end her life. Sonia Exelby, 32, from Portsmouth, England, flew into Gainesville Regional Airport in October and disappeared shortly after, raising concerns among UK officials who alerted U.S. authorities through INTERPOL.
Investigations revealed that Dwain Hall, 53, was connected to Exelby through credit card transactions and communication online. Hall admitted to meeting Exelby via a fetish website approximately two years earlier and described himself as a mentor who tried to prevent her suicide despite acknowledging his own violent tendencies.
Hall picked up Exelby from the airport and took her to an Airbnb in Reddick, Florida. Surveillance and recovered deleted videos showed Exelby with visible bruises, appearing hesitant but consenting to harm under Hall’s questioning. Evidence highlighted a troubling dynamic, with Exelby expressing regret in a message sent to a friend via Discord, indicating she felt trapped and fearful of Hall.
On October 17, investigators found Exelby’s body buried in a shallow grave in Marion County woods. Forensic analysis confirmed multiple stab wounds as the cause of death. Further evidence linked Hall to the crime scene, including a shovel with Exelby’s DNA found in his garage, and a knife discovered in Ohio that tested positive for blood consistent with her.
Hall faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping, credit card fraud, and unlawful use of a communication device. Authorities emphasized that Hall’s controlling behavior played a significant role in the victim’s demise, as indicated by her messages expressing fear and regret.
