Tears and Tributes as Jenny-May Clarkson Bids Farewell to TVNZ Breakfast Show

Tears and Tributes as Jenny-May Clarkson Signs Off from TVNZ Breakfast

Jenny-May Clarkson said an emotional farewell as she signed off from TVNZ Breakfast after more than three years as a co-host. Clarkson, who began the show alongside Chris Chang, acknowledged early in the broadcast that it would be hard to hold back tears. She expressed deep gratitude to viewers for allowing her into their homes every morning, saying, “I will miss the privilege.”

During the broadcast, Clarkson gave special mentions to those closest to her. She thanked her husband Dean for his unwavering support through all her moods. She also acknowledged her mother’s faith and her late father’s lasting influence, describing how she feels his courage daily.

A Legacy on and Off Screen

Clarkson’s departure was marked with heartfelt tributes from colleagues and viewers alike. Former co-host Matty McLean called working with Jenny-May one of the “greatest joys” of his life, praising her kindness and warmth. 1News political editor Maiki Sherman highlighted Clarkson’s role as a pillar of strength for Māori and Pasifika journalists at TVNZ, calling her a “Māori matriarch.”

Clarkson’s time on Breakfast has been celebrated through a highlight reel shared midway during the show. It featured her fun and compassionate moments, including dancing with former hosts and comforting flood victims live on air. Archival footage reminded viewers of her earlier career triumphs, such as retiring from netball to focus on broadcasting.

A Trailblazer for Māori Representation

Jenny-May Clarkson holds the distinction of being the first wahine Māori appointed as a Breakfast co-host, proudly representing Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Kahu heritage. Before her TV career, she was a renowned athlete, debuting as a Silver Fern at 23 and playing 26 test matches. She also represented New Zealand in touch rugby.

Her broadcasting career began in 2005 after retiring from sport, initially covering sports news for TVNZ. In 2019, she transitioned to Breakfast, replacing Daniel Faitaua, and secured a permanent co-host role the following year.

Gratitude and Well-Wishes

Viewers and friends sent numerous messages throughout Clarkson’s final show. Reporter Jack Tame shared a special message recalling their early days together. Clarkson humorously joked about trying not to cry despite the many flowers arriving in the studio. She closed her final broadcast with a warm farewell: “Aroha nui ki a koutou. Kia pai ō rā ngāki whakata. Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you when I see you.”

Jenny-May Clarkson’s departure marks the end of an emotional chapter for TVNZ Breakfast fans. Her influence on New Zealand broadcasting and her role as a leader for Māori and Pasifika voices leave a lasting legacy on the morning show and beyond.
