Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Second India-South Africa Test

Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati due to a neck injury. Gill sustained the injury during the first Test in Kolkata and faced only three balls before retiring hurt on the second day.

Gill had traveled to Guwahati after undergoing medical observation in Kolkata but was advised more rest to avoid further neck spasms. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed he will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his condition.

India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, highlighted the risk of Gill aggravating the injury if he plays too soon. Kotak said the medical team would decide if Gill is fit to play, stressing the team will not risk his health for the game.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant will lead the Indian team as captain in the Guwahati Test. Pant initially took over the captaincy during the Kolkata Test after Gill left the field and will continue to lead in his absence.

With no official replacement named yet, India may consider B Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, or Nitish Kumar Reddy as potential options to fill Gill’s spot in the playing XI. The injury raises concerns about Gill’s availability for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa starting later this month.

The ODI squad selection is expected on the 23rd, and Gill’s continued recovery remains a key factor for the team management. His previous neck spasms caused him to miss a Test against New Zealand recently, indicating a recurring issue.

India lost the first Test by 30 runs after being bowled out for 93 chasing 124, on a pitch with uneven bounce challenges. Gill’s absence in the second Test will test the team’s depth and leadership dynamics.

The BCCI and coaching staff remain cautious about player fitness and injury management ahead of this critical series. Pant’s leadership will be pivotal as India aims to bounce back against South Africa in Guwahati.
