Lando Norris Secures Pole in Rain-Soaked Las Vegas Qualifying
Lando Norris claimed pole position for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in challenging wet conditions. The McLaren driver set a slick lap time of 1m 47.934s, almost three-tenths quicker than second-placed Max Verstappen.
The qualifying session remained wet throughout, testing drivers’ skill and courage on the slippery street circuit. Carlos Sainz impressed by finishing third for Williams, continuing his strong qualifying form ahead of George Russell.
Russell dominated the earlier sessions, topping both Q1 and Q2 despite the difficult weather. His best from Q2 was 1m 50.935, indicating just how demanding the track was with standing water forcing many off the racing line.
Oscar Piastri, Norris’s title rival, qualified fifth after a late mistake at Turn 12. Piastri went off track during a wheel-to-wheel battle with Isack Hadjar, costing him crucial time in the final run.
Liam Lawson’s Racing Bulls car finished sixth, slotting between Piastri and Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. The top ten was rounded out by Hadjar, Charles Leclerc, who also ran wide late, and Pierre Gasly.
Notable eliminations included Nico Hulkenberg, Lance Stroll, and both Haas drivers Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman in Q2. In Q1, Alex Albon withdrew after damaging his suspension, while Lewis Hamilton finished last of the twenty drivers amid struggles with grip.
Norris described the session as “stressful as hell,” admitting the conditions were treacherous. He nearly lost control exiting Turn 16 but managed to hold on for his third consecutive pole. “It’s so slippery out there," he said. "Close to hitting the wall but good enough for P1 today.”
The Las Vegas Grand Prix race will commence at 8 PM local time on Sunday. Fans can expect a thrilling wet-weather battle around the iconic Strip Circuit following this remarkable qualifying performance.
