Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley is gearing up for a challenging away match against Notts County at Meadow Lane. After an impressive 2-0 victory at Walsall, Cowley aims to maintain momentum by securing another crucial win on the road in League Two.
The U’s face selection difficulties, as key midfielder Teddy Bishop is doubtful due to a dead leg sustained last weekend. Cowley acknowledged the injury challenges but emphasized the team’s determination to adapt and find the best approach to face Notts County.
Injury Concerns and Squad Depth
Cowley remarked, “We have some challenges in terms of selection, with injuries. But for us, it’s not to be curtailed by that and to find the best way of playing against the opponent.” He compared their situation to Harrogate’s recent fixture against Notts County, where Harrogate had minimal substitutes available. Although Colchester do have some missing players, the boss noted the presence of promising young talent within the squad.
The manager also highlighted logistical issues, mentioning the team’s travel constraints. “We only travel on the day for this one – we have a three-hour policy with travel and this one is just under three hours,” Cowley said. Despite these challenges, he stressed that excuses are off the table, hoping for smoother travel arrangements compared to the previous week.
Tactical Approach Against a Formidable Opponent
Notts County currently sit fourth in League Two and boast an unbeaten streak over their past six matches. Cowley identified the Magpies’ style as demanding on defense. “Notts County ask a lot of questions of your defensive line. They do it in a way where they really try and dominate possession,” he explained.
The opposition’s tactics involve attacking wide areas and overloading defensive zones by creating numerical advantages. Last week, Colchester found success using a five-defender system, and Cowley is considering whether to deploy the same formation again. He stressed the importance of versatility, stating, “If you want to be a successful team, you have to win games in all different ways.”
Reflecting on his managerial experience, Cowley recalled six promotions, noting that successful teams adapt their style to overcome various challenges. He expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance last Saturday and acknowledged the upcoming test as another opportunity to prove their resilience.
