Oscar Piastri described his fifth-place qualifying result at the Las Vegas Grand Prix as “a tough one to take.” Despite showing strong pace, his final Q3 run was halted by a yellow flag.

The McLaren driver was optimistic about securing a better grid position and expressed frustration over circumstances beyond his control. “We were quick, there’s no doubt about that,” Piastri said, but the yellow flag prevented a final improvement.

Piastri, 24, acknowledged that while he felt confident about his speed during qualifying, external factors impacted his session adversely. He reflected, “At least I can say that the pace was good out there – it felt pretty good in Q3, [but there were] things that we couldn’t control.”

This qualifying outcome follows a difficult sequence for Piastri, who has finished off the podium in the last five races. However, he did not consider bad luck a recurring issue. “There’s been plenty of things that could have gone my way previously,” he commented.

The Australian understands that motorsport often involves uncontrollable elements but remains focused on the race ahead. “A tough one to take when it looked like we were on for a good result. I can’t do much about it unfortunately,” he said.

Looking ahead, Piastri aims to improve his position on race day at the Las Vegas circuit. He starts the race 24 points behind teammate and championship leader Lando Norris.

Key details of Piastri’s qualifying session include:

1. Initial strong pace despite mixed track conditions.
2. Yellow flag disruption during the final Q3 attempt.
3. Finished three places behind Norris, who secured P2.
4. Recent five-race stretch without a podium finish.
5. Entering race day with a notable points deficit to the championship leader.

Piastri’s focus will be on capitalizing on race strategy and making up ground amid the competitive field in Las Vegas.
