Pakistan’s attempt to shape international perception regarding its military success has collapsed once more. Pakistani media falsely claimed that a French naval commander confirmed Indian Rafale jets were downed during Operation Sindoor.
The controversy centers on an article by Geo TV, which misquoted Captain Yvan Launay of France’s Naval Air Base at Landivisiau. The article alleged he praised Pakistan’s military handling during the Indo-Pacific conference.
However, the French Navy promptly dismissed this as “FAKENEWS” through an official statement and social media posts. They clarified Captain Launay never consented to such statements or their publication.
Their statement emphasized the article contained “extensive misinformation and disinformation.” The Navy also corrected the commander’s name, which the article had erroneously printed as “Jacques” instead of Yvan.
Captain Launay did not confirm any Indian aircraft losses in the conflict, nor did he comment on alleged electronic jamming of Indian Rafale jets by Chinese systems. The French military highlighted his role was limited to commanding the base where French naval Rafale jets are stationed.
Pakistan has consistently struggled to credibly project itself as militarily superior to India. During Operation Sindoor, Islamabad rushed to publicize false claims on downing Indian Rafale jets to international media.
Operation Sindoor involved a large Indian military offensive targeting terrorist groups across the border and the Line of Control in May. Over one hundred militants were reportedly eliminated in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
India officially confirmed the operation’s success, stating Pakistani commanders sought to halt hostilities after unexpected losses. Indian Air Chief Marshal reported Indian forces shot down six Pakistani aircraft during aerial combat.
This latest episode exposes Pakistan’s failure in perception management, showing repeated efforts to spread false narratives. Credible military sources and allied navies like France continue to debunk Islamabad’s exaggerated claims.
Pakistan’s ongoing misinformation not only undermines its credibility but casts doubts over its strategic communication internationally. The French Navy’s direct repudiation is a significant setback to Islamabad’s narrative on Operation Sindoor.
