The San Francisco 49ers will not see linebacker Fred Warner return this season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Warner suffered a fractured ankle in Week 6, and Shanahan confirmed that a comeback this year is unlikely regardless of the team’s playoff status.
Initially, Shanahan mentioned a typical recovery period of about three months, sparking some hope among fans that Warner could rejoin for a potential NFC divisional round in mid-January. However, Shanahan revised that timeline to roughly four months during a recent update. He emphasized that his medical staff had set the estimate around four months from the injury date but admitted he does not monitor Warner’s progress in detail every week.
The 49ers currently hold a 7-4 record, which positions them just above the playoff cutoff as the seventh seed in the NFC. Despite this standing, Shanahan stated he does not expect Warner to participate in any more games this season—regular season or playoffs. When asked about Warner’s chances for a return in the postseason, Shanahan said he had not specifically inquired but remains doubtful.
General manager John Lynch had expressed a more cautious optimism last month, citing Warner’s determination as a vital factor. Warner, a four-time AP first-team All-Pro linebacker, had started 62 consecutive games and missed only one of 122 career appearances before his injury. Lynch recognized the linebacker’s strong motivational drive and the possibility that he might defy expectations.
Lynch remarked through KNBR, “Fred will never rule it out. You give him a timeline—he’ll want to break it and beat it.” He stressed the importance of ongoing medical evaluations and rehabilitation work in determining any potential comeback, saying, “Let’s get there and let’s see. We’ve just got to go put in the work so that perhaps it is.”
As the 49ers advance in the season, the team and fans will closely monitor Warner’s recovery progress. Still, the current outlook points toward his absence throughout the remainder of the campaign, leaving the 49ers to rely on depth at the linebacker position.
