Record Rainfall Triggers Deadly Floods and Massive Evacuations in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is facing catastrophic flooding caused by record-breaking rainfall, leading to dozens of deaths and widespread evacuations. In southern Thailand, at least 33 people have died as relentless rains caused severe floods across 10 provinces.

The city of Hat Yai recorded an unprecedented 335mm of rain in a single day, its heaviest in 300 years. Streets and homes in the business hub were submerged, with many residents stranded on rooftops awaiting rescue. More than 2 million people in Thailand have been affected, but only about 13,000 have been relocated to emergency shelters. Many remain cut off and unable to access aid. Neighboring countries have also suffered. In Vietnam, the death toll has climbed to 98 within a week due to flooding. Malaysia evacuated over 19,000 people, setting up 126 evacuation centers mainly in northern states Kelantan and Perlis. Rescue teams there traversed floodwaters to reach isolated communities.
