Karl-Anthony Towns Interested in Extending Knicks Tenure Amid Ongoing Contract Negotiations

Karl-Anthony Towns has expressed a strong desire to continue his career with the New York Knicks despite current contract extension talks stalling. He values being close to home and playing for the Knicks’ fanbase, stating, “It means more than the money.”

Towns emphasized the positive relationship he maintains with the Knicks’ front office, including team president Leon Rose and Senior Vice President Gersson Rosas. He remarked that their communication remains open and friendly, highlighting, “Me, [Leon Rose] and [Gersson Rosas] and everyone, we’re great.”

The Knicks and Towns missed the Oct. 20 deadline for a contract extension that could have added two years and $150 million to his current deal. Should a new agreement be reached before or during next season, reports suggest it might be a four-year deal worth approximately $260 million.

Per ESPN Front Office Insider Bobby Marks, Towns will be eligible for another contract extension after the NBA Finals in 2026. Currently, Towns has at least two years and around $110 million left on his existing contract. Additionally, he holds a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 season, meaning he cannot become a free agent until at least 2027 or possibly 2028.

Given the length and value remaining on his contract, the Knicks were not pressured to finalize an extension before this season. The organization appears comfortable allowing Towns time to acclimate and prove his fit within head coach Mike Brown’s system.

Towns has faced some efficiency challenges this season, shooting 44.9 percent, which is a career low as he adjusts to a new role. His production has been stronger when playing center rather than power forward, averaging 21.7 points and 11.9 rebounds entering a recent game against the Boston Celtics.

In his own words, Towns described the difference in his roles, saying, “It’s just a different place I’m in in our system… when I’m 5 or I’m 4, it’s a totally different script for me in the game.” He remains focused on contributing to the team’s success while hoping for a contract resolution after the Finals.
