Tradition and Honor at the Army-Navy Game in Baltimore
The Army-Navy college football game takes place this season at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. This event is unlike any other, rooted deeply in culture and pride beyond just sport.
Landon Robinson, a senior Navy defensive end, emphasized the rivalry’s unique intensity. He said, "The intensity never changes. No matter the records, it’s a different season when you go into the Army-Navy game."
A Symbol of Service and Discipline
Army head coach Jeff Monken described the game as representing "men and women in our armed forces who train and prepare to defend freedom." He called it "America’s game" and underscored that no other game holds this symbolism. The players’ commitment extends beyond the field as they serve the country after graduation.
Unlike many college programs, both academies avoid the transfer portal and name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. Players commit to four years at the academy, balancing rigorous academics and military training.
Navy’s coach Brian Newberry highlighted the challenges and rewards, saying, "It takes foresight for families to see, but the academies offer world-class education and leadership training." He noted these opportunities come with the chance to serve the country.
Player Development and Individual Growth
One notable story is Blake Horvath, a Navy quarterback turned Heisman candidate. He has passed for 1,390 yards with nine touchdowns and rushed for 1,040 yards with 14 scores this season. Horvath shared, "As a freshman, I doubted myself and felt like I didn’t belong. Many people believed in me and helped me grow."
Such development demonstrates that the Army-Navy game is not only about football but personal and leadership growth fostered uniquely at the service academies.
More than Just a Game
This year’s winner will receive the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, a coveted prize that Navy currently holds. This trophy symbolizes leadership and excellence beyond typical college football achievements, reflecting the values these academies instill in their athletes.
The Army-Navy game continues to be a spectacle reflecting dedication, honor, and service that transcends just football rivalries.
