George Clooney Steps Back from Directing to Prioritize Fatherhood

George Clooney recently shared that directing films is no longer feasible for him due to his parenting responsibilities. The Oscar-winning actor, who has eight-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, made this admission during an interview about his new movie, Jay Kelly.

Clooney explained to the Irish Examiner that directing requires being on the road for up to ten months. He said, "Directing right now is not something I can do anymore, because I’ve got kids, and I’ve got to be home."

He added that making such career decisions becomes easier later in life after achieving success. "It’s a lot harder for people who have to make those decisions when they’re trying to make their mark," Clooney noted.

Known as one of Hollywood’s leading actors, Clooney has also had a successful directing career. He debuted as a director in 2002 with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and gained acclaim for Good Night, and Good Luck, which was adapted into a Broadway play.

His most recent directing work was the 2023 sports drama The Boys in the Boat, based on the true story of the University of Washington’s rowing team winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Clooney has directed several notable films but now puts his family first.

He shares his twins with wife Amal Clooney, a British human rights lawyer. They have been married since 2014. Clooney has described parenting as life-changing and humbling, even recalling a funny moment when his son dismissed his role as Batman during Halloween.

Jay Kelly, streaming on Netflix, stars Clooney as an aging movie star on a journey of self-discovery. The film includes co-stars Adam Sandler and Greta Gerwig. Critics have praised Clooney’s raw and revealing performance, highlighting a departure from his usual on-screen persona.
