Conor McGregor Aims for Islam Makhachev and 170-Pound Title Shot in UFC Return

Conor McGregor Eyes Islam Makhachev for Welterweight Title Shot

Conor McGregor is setting his sights on the UFC welterweight division, targeting Islam Makhachev’s 170-pound belt. The former two-division champion plans to compete at the upcoming UFC White House event scheduled for June.

McGregor expressed strong motivation to fight Makhachev, stating to Bloody Elbow, “I’m self-motivated and I for sure want a crack at that belt.” He aims to become a triple champion by adding the welterweight title to his collection.

Islam Makhachev currently holds the welterweight crown and is ranked number one in MMA Fighting’s Pound-for-Pound Rankings. Meanwhile, McGregor has not fought since 2021 and last won a fight nearly six years ago.

There is a historic rivalry between the camps of Makhachev and McGregor. Makhachev is mentored by Khabib Nurmagomedov, who famously defeated McGregor at UFC 229. The event also involved a post-fight brawl with fines and suspensions for both fighters and their teams.

McGregor has acknowledged Makhachev’s successful step up from lightweight to welterweight. Makhachev defeated former champion Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322, impressing McGregor with his southpaw style and courage to move up in weight.

Regarding a fight against Makhachev, McGregor said, “It would be a good fight, a good scrap. Let’s see what happens. Let’s get back in the mix.” McGregor remains open to other opponents, including a potential rematch with Michael Chandler, whose scheduled fight at UFC 303 was canceled due to McGregor’s injury.

McGregor is confident about fighting at the White House event, with UFC CEO Dana White confirming the card is progressing. McGregor stays ready in the gym, training twice daily in anticipation of official matchmaking announcements expected around February.

As the UFC prepares for a monumental year, McGregor’s pursuit of the welterweight title could reshape divisional dynamics and add another chapter to his storied career. Fans and analysts alike watch eagerly as McGregor’s comeback unfolds.
