Moderate Earthquake Felt in Central and Northern Portugal, Including Guarda Region

A moderate earthquake shook the Center and North regions of Portugal shortly after midnight on Saturday. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reported the tremor measured a magnitude of 4.1.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located between Celorico da Beira and Fornos de Algodres, in the Guarda district. It originated at a depth of 20 kilometers underground, indicating a moderately shallow seismic event.

According to eyewitness reports collected by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (CSEM), residents experienced the shaking across a wide area. Locations affected ranged from Ferreira do Zêzere in the south to Barcelos in the north.

Other cities where the earthquake was felt include Coimbra, Porto, Viseu, and Covilhã. This expansive area highlights the significant reach of the seismic activity despite its moderate intensity.

Authorities have confirmed that no damage has been reported so far as a result of the earthquake. The lack of reported injuries or structural harm suggests the event, while noticeable, was not severe.
