Two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed in central Syria on December 13 after being ambushed by an alleged Islamic State (IS) gunman, according to US officials cited by AFP. The shooting targeted a joint US-Syrian patrol near the ancient ruins of Palmyra, a site previously under IS control and recognized by UNESCO.

President Donald Trump expressed condolences on Truth Social, stating, “We mourn the loss of three patriotic Americans in Syria.” He also vowed a “very serious retaliation” against the perpetrators. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the attack took place in Palmyra and identified it as a lone IS gunman ambush. The assailant was quickly engaged and killed by US forces, according to US Central Command on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident caused injuries to three other US soldiers who are recuperating well. The troops had been engaged in meetings with key leaders to support counterterrorism efforts when the attack occurred, Parnell added. US Special Envoy Tom Barrack described the assault as targeting a joint US-Syrian government patrol aimed at coordinating anti-IS operations.

Trump highlighted that the new Syrian leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who visited the White House last month, was “deeply angry and concerned” about the ambush. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani condemned the terrorist attack strongly, emphasizing the cooperation between US and Syrian forces in fighting terrorism near Palmyra.

IS, despite suffering defeat in Syria and Iraq years ago, continues to maintain a presence especially in Syria’s vast desert areas. The United States maintains military deployments not only in northeastern Syrian Kurdish-controlled zones but also at the Al-Tanf base near the Jordanian border.
