Self Updates on Peterson’s Fight Against Cramps: ‘We Still Believe We’ll Get Through This’

Peterson’s battle with cramps continues as Self remains hopeful

Kansas coach Bill Self has shared an update on star guard Darryn Peterson, who has been struggling with quadriceps cramps. The highly touted freshman, averaging 19.8 points per game on 52.8% shooting, has faced intermittent availability due to these issues.

Self revealed that the team has explored many home remedies to help Peterson, including mustard packets, bananas, and pickle juice. “People are caring, but everybody has an idea,” Self said, acknowledging the variety of suggestions.

The Jayhawks are also working closely with medical professionals to aid Peterson’s recovery. After a hamstring strain sidelined him for about a month, he returned briefly but has since missed games due to the recurring quad cramps. Self confirmed the hamstring injury is no longer a concern.

Though Peterson practiced recently, Self noted his movements were still limited. “His body’s just not reacting,” Self explained. “His brain’s telling him to go somewhere and do it, but his body’s just not reacting to it.”

The next opportunity for Peterson to return will be the upcoming Monday night matchup against Davidson. Kansas will then have 12 days before starting Big 12 conference play at UCF. Self emphasized that easing Peterson back into full game action requires patience and caution.

Self admitted feeling “concerned” since the team needs sustained chemistry. “It doesn’t work like, ‘He practiced for two days, so he’s ready to go.’ That’s not how it works,” he said. The team is aware that Peterson will need to balance his own role with supporting teammates once reintegrated.

On a positive note, guard Melvin Council Jr.’s recent scoring surge may partly stem from Peterson’s absence. Council scored 36 points in a recent game and followed it with another strong performance.

Self remains optimistic about overcoming these challenges. “If we can figure this out, I think our team will be better in February than we would have been otherwise,” he said. The Jayhawks await Peterson’s full return while managing his recovery carefully.
