Garmin Sees 5.1 Million Runs in Indonesia, Training Habits Are Getting Serious

Running activity in Indonesia has surged sharply at the start of 2026, with Garmin Connect recording more than 5.1 million runs between January and May. The figure marks a rise of about 46 percent from the roughly 3.5 million activities logged in the same period last year.

The growth is not limited to casual exercise. Trail running also gained momentum, with around 58,000 activities recorded in the first five months of the year, up about 74 percent from 33,000 in the same period a year earlier.

More consistent training patterns

The data suggests Indonesian runners are doing more than simply adding sessions. Garmin reported an average distance of 6.76 kilometers per run, with training time at around 45.5 minutes per session.

Average pace stood at 6 minutes 44 seconds per kilometer. That pattern points to a growing focus on endurance, consistency, and gradual performance improvement rather than short bursts of activity.

Garmin’s global figures reflect a similar direction. Runners recorded nearly 13 percent more indoor running sessions and 3 percent more outdoor running sessions compared with the previous period.

Across the global user base, the average runner covered about 7.76 kilometers per activity. The 50 to 59 age group was among the most consistent, averaging 8.2 kilometers per session.

Cycling also continues to expand

Cycling activity in Indonesia also rose during the same period. Garmin Connect recorded more than 359,000 outdoor cycling activities from January to May 2026, up about 30 percent from 276,000 in the same months of the previous year.

Indonesian users averaged 44.7 kilometers per cycling session. Average workout duration reached 105.6 minutes, or nearly two hours, while outdoor cycling sessions averaged 108.6 minutes each.

Indoor cycling sessions lasted about 53 minutes on average. Garmin also reported that Indonesian cyclists had an average VO2 Max of 48.6 and a Functional Threshold Power, or FTP, of around 213 watts.

Training is becoming more structured

Garmin said the shift toward more serious exercise is also visible in the growing use of guided programs. Its Half Marathon Training Plan through Garmin Coach remains one of the most widely used training plans among users worldwide.

The company also found that August is the most active month for running globally. Saturday is the preferred day for runners to log their longest distances.

Chandrawidhi Desideriani, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications at Garmin Indonesia, said the trend reflects a change in mindset around sport. She noted that exercise is becoming a more flexible part of daily life, while runners are paying more attention to consistency, recovery, and varied training.

Through Garmin’s ecosystem, users can track performance in a more complete way. The data includes pace, distance, VO2 Max, sleep quality, and readiness to train.

Technology is supporting the shift

Garmin positions technology as a key support tool for modern runners and cyclists. Its smartwatch line, including Forerunner, fēnix, and Venu, offers health tracking features such as heart rate, sleep quality, VO2 Max, training status, and recovery time.

For cycling users, Garmin offers a broader ecosystem. The lineup includes the Edge GPS Cycling Computer, Rally Power Meter, Varia Smart Lights and Rearview Radar, and Tacx Smart Trainer for indoor training.
