WWDC 2026 delivered an unusually emotional moment for Apple as Tim Cook appeared to say goodbye before handing the CEO role to John Ternus on 1 September 2026. The event carried extra weight because Apple used the same stage to introduce its next major step in artificial intelligence.
Cook’s closing appearance was framed less as a corporate transition and more as a public acknowledgment of the community that helped define his tenure. In a pre-recorded video message, he thanked developers around the world and pointed to the tools and technologies Apple has shared with them over the years.
He also described WWDC as one of the most meaningful parts of his time as CEO. According to Cook, the creativity of Apple’s developer community has repeatedly shown that imagination has no limits.
The emotional farewell
Cook received a standing ovation from the audience at Apple Park, where thousands of employees and developers gathered for the conference. He joked that he had never seen so many iPhones in one place before moving into a more reflective farewell.
“Being the CEO of Apple is the honor of a lifetime,” Cook said in his closing remarks. He added that Apple’s core mission has remained the same since he took over from Steve Jobs in 2011: building products that genuinely help people.
Cook also thanked employees, developers, and users for supporting Apple through the past 15 years. In comments reported by BBC, he said the work of developers has enriched lives across the world.
Apple’s next chapter is already visible
Cook’s goodbye came alongside a clear message that Apple intends to keep moving forward. The company used WWDC 2026 to highlight Siri AI, a major upgrade to its virtual assistant that has long been seen as behind in the AI race.
Apple says the new Siri AI will be more personal and better able to understand conversation context, images, and broader information so interactions feel more natural. That positioning makes the assistant one of the most important products in Apple’s next phase.
The company also announced security changes tied to iOS 27. One of the most notable updates expands parental controls by requiring approval before a child can communicate with an unknown contact.
Apple will also automatically blur or censor images flagged as sexual or violent when they are sent to a child’s account. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, said Siri AI development will continue to prioritize user needs and privacy protection.
John Ternus inherits a company built for the next shift
After Cook steps down, John Ternus will take over as CEO from his current role as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. He did not appear on the main stage, but he was present during parts of the conference and joined media briefings about Siri AI.
Analysts say Ternus inherits a strong foundation for Apple’s next phase. The company is expected to lean even more heavily on the combination of hardware, artificial intelligence, digital services, and its own custom chips.
Cook ended his farewell with a confident tone, saying, “I truly believe the best is still ahead.” For Apple, that message was paired with a product showcase meant to prove the company is not pausing for transition, but preparing for a new era.
