NBA star Ben Simmons’s return to basketball remains uncertain as he focuses on recovery and new ventures. Currently not on any NBA roster, Simmons is dedicating his time to regaining peak physical condition and exploring opportunities beyond the court.

Simmons recently became the controlling operator of the South Florida Sails, a professional offshore saltwater fishing team. The team competes in the Sport Fishing Championship, a league started in 2021 that features 16 clubs across several states competing for a title. Simmons called the league “the first real competitive sport fishing championship,” comparing it to Formula 1 and LIV Golf in their respective sports.

The former No. 1 overall NBA draft pick took time during the offseason to invest in his passion for fishing, a sport he has loved since childhood visits to the beach. He expressed enthusiasm about building the South Florida Sails franchise and growing the fishing community around Miami. Simmons acknowledged his current fishing skills are not at a pro-angler level but emphasized his commitment to nurturing the sport’s growth locally.

Physically, Simmons has endured significant challenges. He has struggled with back issues and mobility problems, which have limited his playtime and effectiveness in recent seasons. After being waived by the Brooklyn Nets and a brief stint with the Los Angeles Clippers, Simmons is optimistic about his rehabilitation progress. He revealed that he is engaging in rigorous two-a-day basketball and strength training sessions six days a week.

Simmons indicated that if offered a spot now, he could contribute to an NBA team but wants to return only when fully healthy and capable of competing at his best. His goal is to avoid wasting a roster spot and give the game his full effort. He suggested a potential return around the All-Star break or later in the season, depending on his body’s response to treatment.

Reflecting on his career, Simmons shared pride in his accomplishments, including three All-Star selections and defensive honors, yet acknowledged the tough moments involving injuries and team conflicts. He also re-signed with agent Rich Paul to guide his next NBA chapter.
