US Forces Reportedly Launch Attacks on ISIS Militants in West Africa Region

Former President Donald Trump announced that he ordered a military strike against ISIS militants in northwest Nigeria. He stated the strike targeted terrorists accused of violently attacking Christians in the region.

Trump described the operation as “powerful and deadly,” emphasizing his role as Commander in Chief in directing the attack. He claimed the United States carried out “numerous perfect strikes” through the Department of War.

The president warned these groups previously to stop persecuting Christians, saying, “there would be hell to pay.” He also promised continued US efforts to prevent radical Islamic terrorism from prospering.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed gratitude for the Nigerian government’s support in the operation. CNN has sought additional details from both the White House and Nigerian authorities.

Trump has recently focused on the situation of Christians in Nigeria, urging military readiness to protect them. In November, he instructed his defense secretary to “prepare for possible action” and pledged US intervention if necessary.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu extended Christmas greetings and called for peace across religious divides. He reaffirmed his commitment to religious freedom and protecting all Nigerians from violence.

Nigeria faces complex security challenges involving religiously motivated attacks, communal tensions, and resource disputes. Both Christian and Muslim communities have suffered from extremist violence.

Last autumn, Trump labeled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” under the International Religious Freedom Act. This designation highlighted alleged widespread and severe violations of religious freedom in the country.

Some American conservatives, including Senator Ted Cruz, have urged stronger US intervention to protect Nigerian Christians. They criticize the Nigerian government for insufficient action against attacks.

Although Trump initially promised to limit foreign military interventions, he has authorized recent strikes in Iran and bolstered military presence near Venezuela. This latest operation in Nigeria reflects a continued assertive approach to combating terrorism abroad.
