The Green Bay Packers have agreed to hire Jonathan Gannon as their new defensive coordinator, according to multiple sources. Gannon will take over the defensive unit following Jeff Hafley’s departure to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Gannon, previously the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, was dismissed after a 3-14 season. He compiled a 15-36 record over three years in Arizona. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur valued Gannon’s experience as a former head coach, which played a key role in the hiring decision.
The new defensive coordinator will lead a defense featuring standout players like Micah Parsons, a first-team All-Pro defensive end, and safety Xavier McKinney, a second-team All-Pro. Gannon becomes the fourth defensive coordinator under LaFleur’s eight-season tenure in Green Bay.
Prior to Gannon, Jeff Hafley served as the Packers’ defensive coordinator for two seasons. Hafley was preceded by Mike Pettine and Joe Barry, who were both relieved of their duties in previous years. Hafley’s success paved the way for his promotion to Miami’s head coaching role.
Gannon’s hiring comes amid competition from other NFL teams. Sources revealed that Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh showed interest in Gannon for defensive coordinator posts with the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants, respectively. The Packers moved swiftly to secure him before those opportunities materialized.
The Packers missed the chance to interview Denver Broncos assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator Jim Leonhard. The Broncos’ participation in the AFC Championship Game blocked the timing for that discussion. Leonhard had been interviewed by the Dallas Cowboys earlier but was unavailable when the Packers were searching for Hafley’s replacement.
Before selecting Gannon, LaFleur interviewed several defensive candidates including Christian Parker, who later became the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, Chicago Bears pass game coordinator Al Harris, and Minnesota Vikings pass game coordinator Daronte Jones. LaFleur also consulted his own defensive assistant coaches during the process.
Jonathan Gannon, age 43, served as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. During that time, the Eagles consistently ranked in the NFL top 10 for total defense. In 2022, the team led the league in fewest passing yards allowed and sacks, also ranking highly in interceptions.
LaFleur continues to evaluate potential modifications to his coaching staff for the upcoming season. Recently, he signed a multiyear contract extension with the Packers, underscoring organizational confidence in his leadership.
In parallel, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and vice president of football operations Russ Ball are expected to finalize new deals soon. These moves signal a broader commitment to stability and competitiveness in Green Bay as the club prepares for the next NFL campaign.
