Top House Democrats have issued a firm ultimatum to former President Donald Trump: fire Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem or face impeachment proceedings. This demand follows the recent fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis during a federal immigration enforcement operation.
The impeachment articles, initially introduced earlier this month after another fatal incident involving Renee Good, have been signed by a majority of House Democrats. These lawmakers hold Noem accountable for what they view as a reckless and violent approach by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, together with deputies Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, emphasized the gravity of the situation. They stated, “The violence unleashed on the American people by the Department of Homeland Security must end forthwith. Kristi Noem should be fired immediately, or we will commence impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives.”
President Trump publicly supported Noem despite these calls, describing her performance positively and asserting that “the border is totally secure.” This position contrasts sharply with the growing bipartisan criticism targeting Noem’s leadership.
Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly spearheaded the impeachment articles, and 162 of the 213 House Democrats had co-sponsored the resolution by Tuesday. Supporters span both safe districts and those considered vulnerable in upcoming elections, reflecting widespread concern within the party.
Senate Democrats also joined the chorus demanding accountability. They have pledged to block funding for DHS due to its inclusion of money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Republican resistance to separate DHS funding from other government operations raises the risk of a partial government shutdown after current spending expires.
Notably, an increasing number of Democratic senators from various ideological backgrounds called for Noem’s removal. Thom Tillis, a retiring Republican senator from North Carolina, became the first GOP member to join these demands, describing Noem’s conduct as “disqualifying.”
Moderate Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania appealed directly to Trump on social media, urging an immediate firing. Fetterman cited the deaths tied to DHS actions and warned against repeating former President Biden’s mistake of retaining a poorly performing DHS secretary.
Progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren also condemned Noem’s handling of the Pretti killing. Warren highlighted Pretti’s background as a VA nurse, emphasizing that he was not a threat but rather a bystander who tried to help. She demanded Noem’s resignation on humanitarian grounds.
Jacky Rosen, a moderate Nevada senator, called Noem “an abject failure” in managing her department. Rosen accused her of either being incompetent or complicit in constitutional violations committed by DHS under her watch, strongly advocating for her impeachment and removal.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has set Noem’s testimony date for early March. Democratic ranking member Dick Durbin criticized her prior refusal to testify, suggesting Noem’s continued tenure is uncertain as scrutiny intensifies.
Speculation regarding Noem’s relationship with Trump increased following the appointment of Tom Homan as the new overseer of Minneapolis operations, replacing a border patrol official who reported to her. Analysts view this as a potential sign of diminishing confidence in her leadership.
Impeachment of cabinet secretaries remains historically rare. Before the 2024 GOP-led impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, the only other cabinet official impeached was William Belknap, the 19th-century war secretary. Neither faced conviction in the Senate.
Republican reactions to Noem’s role have been mixed. While many remain cautious, some, like Utah Senator John Curtis, criticized Noem’s premature public statements regarding the Pretti incident. Curtis expressed that her comments undermined trust without all facts being established.
Maine Senator Susan Collins has requested a temporary pause on immigration enforcement operations under Noem’s purview for a review and to ensure targeted actions. Collins is seen as a vulnerable Republican facing a tough re-election battle, intensifying interest in this issue’s political impact.
