The US military is set to conduct a multi-day air exercise in the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran. This move is part of Washington’s efforts to strengthen its military presence in the region.
According to Lieutenant General Derek France, commander of the US Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT), the exercise will test airmen’s ability to disperse, operate, and execute combat sorties under challenging conditions. The drills will occur alongside regional partners.
This development follows warnings from former President Donald Trump about an “armada” heading toward Iran, signaling potential military action. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group has already arrived in the region, as confirmed by Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees US forces in the Middle East and surrounding areas.
Although the US has increased its military deployment, no final decision on direct action against Iran has been announced. Sources indicate that options remain under active consideration, with Trump expressing a preference to avoid conflict while maintaining vigilance.
CENTCOM has not disclosed specific details about the exercise’s location, duration, or the assets involved. The lack of transparency is likely intended to maintain operational security and flexibility during this period of heightened tensions.
The growing conflict stems from Iran’s harsh crackdown on widespread anti-government protests. Reports by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimate over 5,800 protesters killed, with thousands more deaths under investigation. Iran acknowledges that thousands have died but disputes some figures.
President Trump condemned the violence and expressed willingness to intervene if Tehran continued its suppression. Regional US allies have expressed concerns about potential military operations against Iran. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have both declared they will not allow their airspace to be used for strikes targeting Iran. The UAE, which hosts American forces at its Abu Dhabi base, also stated it would not provide logistical support for such actions.
