The New York Jets recently completed an in-person interview with Frank Reich for their offensive coordinator position. This move highlights the team’s intent to strengthen their offensive leadership with a candidate who has extensive NFL experience.
Reich, 64, currently serves as a senior adviser for Stanford University football. During the 2025 season, he acted as the interim head coach of Stanford, steering the team to its best win record since 2020.
His coaching career in the NFL spans more than a decade, including head coaching roles with the Carolina Panthers in 2023 and the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 through 2022. While with the Colts, Reich achieved a 40-33-1 regular season record and led the team to playoff appearances in 2018 and 2020.
Reich’s background as an offensive coordinator is well-established. He helped the Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl LII while serving as their OC from 2016 to 2017. Additionally, he was the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers (2014-15) and wide receivers coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2012.
Beginning his coaching career with the Indianapolis Colts, Reich held various roles from coaching intern to quarterbacks coach between 2006 and 2011. This gradual progression showcased his comprehensive understanding of offensive strategies and player development.
Before coaching, Reich spent 14 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback. Drafted in the third round by the Buffalo Bills in 1985, he played primarily as a backup across four teams. Notably, he played for the Jets in 1996, appearing in 10 games and starting 7, alongside current Jets head coach Aaron Glenn.
Reich’s playing career included 118 regular-season games and 14 postseason matchups, highlighted by a Super Bowl XXVII appearance with the Bills. Although the Bills lost to the Dallas Cowboys, this experience adds to Reich’s deep knowledge of high-pressure football environments.
The Jets have also interviewed other candidates for the offensive coordinator role. Monday’s in-person discussions included Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman. Prior to that, the team conducted virtual interviews with Reich, Bevell, Roman, Ronald Curry, and Lunda Wells.
This comprehensive interview process underscores the Jets’ commitment to finding the right offensive coordinator to improve their production on that side of the ball. Reich’s extensive experience as both an NFL player and coach makes him a strong candidate for the position.
