Remains Found in Wayne National Forest Confirmed as Missing Teen Hailey Buzbee in Ongoing Murder Probe

Authorities confirmed that remains discovered in Wayne National Forest, Perry County, belong to 17-year-old Hailey Buzbee, who had been missing since early January. Perry County Prosecuting Attorney Terry Rugg stated that the identification was verified through an autopsy report.

Buzbee, a Fishers, Indiana resident, was reported missing on January 6. Police identified Tyler Thomas, age 39, from Columbus, as a suspect. Investigators believe she left her home with Thomas the night before her disappearance.

Law enforcement believes Buzbee and Thomas connected through online gaming platforms. Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Joe Albert noted that detectives began assisting Fishers police in the search starting January 16. Court documents indicate Buzbee was last known to be at Thomas’ residence on Hunter Avenue, Columbus.

On January 21, homicide detectives executed a search warrant at Thomas’ home and seized his electronic devices. Authorities claim they discovered child sexual abuse material involving Buzbee during the investigation. Thomas faces charges including pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and tampering with evidence.

Further investigation revealed that Buzbee was with Thomas at a short-term rental property in Hocking County. Detectives believe she was killed at this location. The sheriff’s office recovered forensic evidence from the rental, which authorities say suggests a crime took place there.

Thomas surrendered himself to authorities on a recent Saturday, cooperating with the FBI and other agencies to disclose the burial site. Agents from the FBI, Hocking and Perry sheriff’s offices, U.S. Forest Service, and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation recovered the remains accordingly.

Thomas’ attorney, Sam Shamansky, stated that Thomas will plead not guilty if homicide charges are filed. Meanwhile, the FBI released a statement emphasizing the complexity involving multiple jurisdictions and locations, which has delayed further information release.
