Born in Bregenz, Austria, in 1947 to Crimean parents, İlber Ortaylı and his family migrated to Turkey when he was two. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education at Istanbul Austrian High School and Ankara Atatürk High School. Ortaylı earned his undergraduate degree from Ankara University’s Faculty of Language, History, and Geography in the History Department.
He pursued graduate studies in Slavic and East European languages at the University of Vienna. Returning to Ankara University, he received his doctorate in 1974 with a thesis titled “Local Administrations after Tanzimat,” and became an associate professor in 1979. After resigning his post in 1982, Ortaylı taught at numerous universities worldwide and was awarded full professorship upon his return to Turkey in 1989.
Throughout his career, he lectured at prominent institutions including Galatasaray University and Bilkent University. Ortaylı served as the director of the Topkapı Palace Museum from 2005 until his retirement in 2012. In 2018, he acted as an advisor to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
