VCU Dominates Dayton Again, Secures Second Straight Atlantic 10 Title and March Madness Spot

VCU secured its second consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference tournament title by defeating Dayton 70-62, guaranteeing a berth in the upcoming NCAA tournament. The victory marks VCU’s 21st appearance in March Madness, highlighting the program’s consistent presence on college basketball’s biggest stage.

Nyk Lewis led the Rams with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Despite a mixed shooting night inside the arc, Lewis excelled beyond the three-point line, hitting 4 of 5 attempts. Supporting contributions came from reserves Terrence Hill Jr. and Michael Belle, who added 14 and 12 points respectively, helping VCU maintain control of the game.

Dayton, seeded fourth, struggled to overcome VCU’s early lead. Javon Bennett and Amaël L’Etang led the Flyers with 14 and 12 points respectively. Dayton narrowed the deficit several times but could not break VCU’s momentum after halftime. The Rams carried a comfortable 40-25 lead into the locker room.

VCU established a strong start as Hill and Barry Evans hit consecutive three-pointers, building a 16-10 advantage. The Rams never relinquished the lead. Early in the second half, Belle’s deep three and Hill’s pull-up jumper extended the margin to 48-33 with roughly 15 minutes remaining.

Despite a late push from Dayton, including making free throws to cut the gap to seven points with just over two minutes left, the Flyers could not close the distance. VCU’s defense held firm during critical possessions, securing the win. Dayton had hoped to earn their 20th NCAA appearance but fell short against a seasoned VCU squad.

VCU’s march to its 21st NCAA tournament appearance continues a legacy marked by a deep tournament run in 2011, when the Rams reached the Final Four. Headed into the national tournament as Atlantic 10 champions, VCU looks poised to build on its strong season with a 27-7 record. Their balanced scoring and experience offer potential for another impactful March showing.
