Lionel Messi Nets Historic 900th Goal, Miami’s Dreams Shattered in Concacaf Champions Cup Exit

Lionel Messi reached a monumental milestone by scoring the 900th goal of his professional career during Inter Miami’s Concacaf Champions Cup (CCC) second-leg match against Nashville SC. Despite his early goal giving Miami the lead, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, and Miami was eliminated on the away goals rule due to Nashville’s Cristian Espinoza equalizer.

The first leg had ended 0-0, so Nashville advanced thanks to their crucial away goal. Messi converted a perfect chance within the first 10 minutes, taking a pass inside the box and firing a shot across the goal. However, Nashville’s persistence paid off when Espinoza scored a superb strike midway through the second half to level the score.

Miami manager Javier Mascherano expressed his disappointment in the post-match interview but praised his team’s effort. He acknowledged the team had multiple chances to score, especially in the first half, but ultimately attributed the loss to a “somewhat unfortunate sequence of events.” Mascherano took full responsibility for the elimination, emphasizing the commitment and maximum effort of his players.

Nashville coach B.J. Callaghan congratulated Messi on the milestone, calling him “the best.” Messi now stands alongside Cristiano Ronaldo as the only men’s players to have scored 900 official career goals. Ronaldo achieved this feat last September and has since accumulated 965 goals, aiming to surpass the 1,000-goal mark before retirement.

In terms of efficiency, Messi reached 900 goals in 1,142 games, whereas Ronaldo needed 1,236 matches for the same tally. Brazilian legend Pelé ranks third in all-time goals with 765. Among currently active players, Robert Lewandowski holds third place with 690 goals, trailing behind Messi and Ronaldo.

Messi’s goal-scoring record includes 672 goals for Barcelona, 81 for Inter Miami, and 32 for Paris Saint-Germain. Internationally, he has netted 115 goals for Argentina, making him one of the top international scorers in history. His most prolific year came in 2012 when he scored 91 goals across club and country.

His recent performances earned him the 2025 MLS Golden Boot and the 2025 MLS MVP award, marking his second consecutive MVP honor. Messi continues to break records, including the world record for most goals in a calendar year and being the fastest to 100 Champions League goals in 123 games.

The latest milestone reinforces Messi’s status as one of football’s all-time greats, despite Inter Miami’s exit from the CCC. His legacy grows with each match, as he pushes the boundaries of goal-scoring achievements worldwide.
