Orioles’ Early Offense Faces Texas Uncertainty, Bassitt Debut Could Set The Tone

The Orioles are back at Camden Yards with a chance to keep their strong opening run going when they host the Rangers in a three-game series. Baltimore beat Minnesota to win its first set of the season, while Texas arrives with questions around its rotation and enough offensive talent to make this an early test for both clubs.

The matchup matters because both teams are still sorting out roles and building rhythm. The Orioles want early production from a lineup that added more power, while the Rangers are trying to move past the uncertainty created by Jacob deGrom’s neck soreness and a shifting pitching plan.

Baltimore looks for more offense

Baltimore broke through with eight runs on Sunday after struggling earlier against Minnesota starters Joe Ryan and Taj Bradley. That late offensive jump gave the club a cleaner entry into a homestand that could help define the first week of the season.

The lineup now has more depth and more power in the middle. Pete Alonso, Taylor Ward, Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo give the Orioles several ways to score, and the club also has players trying to lock down regular jobs through strong early results.

Dylan Beavers started in center field in a move that stood out in the series finale, and the team also used a “Sunday lineup” that featured Ryan Mountcastle at first base, Alonso at designated hitter, Tyler O’Neill in right field and Colton Cowser on the bench. Early offense could matter for all of those players because playing time often follows production in April.

Texas brings top-end pitching talent but some uncertainty

The Rangers entered the series after a chaotic start that included deGrom being scratched from his second scheduled outing because of neck soreness. Texas has not placed him on the injured list yet, but the situation leaves the rotation less settled than expected.

If healthy, deGrom would remain the headliner of the staff. The former Cy Young winner posted a 12-8 record and a 2.97 ERA last season, and his presence would immediately change the tone of the matchup for Texas.

Behind him, the Rangers still have quality arms in Nathan Eovaldi, MacKenzie Gore, Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker. The offense also gives Texas a real threat level with Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford, Brandon Nimmo, Jake Burger and Joc Pederson in the mix.

Chris Bassitt will make his Orioles debut in Game 1 after Baltimore signed him to a one-year, $18.5 million contract. He went 11-9 with a 3.96 ERA for Toronto last season, and Baseball Reference projects him to deliver 162 innings with a 4.06 ERA this year.

Leiter brings a younger profile to the opener for Texas. The former first-round pick went 10-10 with a 3.86 ERA last season, and Baseball Reference projects him for an 8-9 record and a 4.34 ERA across 137 innings.

Why the series could swing early

The Orioles entered the season with more rotation depth than they had late last year, and that changes how they can handle a series like this. Eflin won the final rotation spot, and Baltimore valued the extra stability after a difficult 2025 season.

Eflin’s return also matters because he worked back from lumbar microdiscectomy surgery last August and still made the Opening Day roster. That kind of depth gives Baltimore a better chance to stay competitive over a long stretch, even if the bullpen or lineup hits a rough patch.

Trevor Rogers adds another layer after he opened the season with seven scoreless innings and his first win. He went 9-3 with a 1.81 ERA over 109.2 innings last year, and Baltimore had him start Opening Day over Kyle Bradish.

The series also offers an early look at how both clubs handle pressure spots in the lineup and rotation. For Baltimore, a few productive games can strengthen claims for young and new players; for Texas, any return to full health from deGrom could quickly stabilize a start that has already become uneven.
