ABC’s Scrubs revival drew strong emotion at PaleyFest LA, where the cast teased that the comeback could continue beyond its first nine episodes. The reunion also sparked excitement about Bob Kelso’s return, with executive producer Bill Lawrence saying he expects Ken Jenkins to come back as the former chief of medicine.

The event marked a full-circle moment for the Emmy-winning comedy, which first ended its original run 16 years ago. Fans filled the screening and panel with laughter, applause, and emotional reactions as the revival’s season finale played before the cast took the stage.

PaleyFest reunion highlights

The panel brought together Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley, Christa Miller, Neil Flynn, Bill Lawrence, and Aseem Batra. Vanessa Bayer, who plays Sibby in the revival, moderated the discussion and helped steer the cast through memories of the show’s original run and the new episodes.

Lawrence said the return carried a major responsibility because the production had to satisfy longtime viewers. He noted that the team wanted to make sure the revival respected what made Scrubs resonate in the first place.

What you can’t manufacture is history,” Chalke said during the panel. “And we have like 25 years.

The cast repeatedly pointed to that long shared history as the reason the reunion still felt natural on screen. Braff and his co-stars said the familiar chemistry never disappeared, even after many years away from the show.

Why the revival may not stop at one season

Lawrence suggested the nine-episode revival was designed as a test to see whether the show still connected with audiences. He also said the creative team wants to widen the world of the series if the response stays strong.

  1. Bring back more familiar characters
  2. Expand stories outside the current core cast
  3. Keep the tone that mixed comedy with genuine emotion
  4. Honor the loyal fan base that carried the show for years

Lawrence said one of the clearest possibilities involves Bob Kelso, played by Ken Jenkins. He described Jenkins as eager to return and said the production plans to make it happen.

Ken Jenkins is older. He’s in his 80s. He’s super excited to get back here and we’re going to make that happen,” Lawrence said.

Braff backed up that idea and said the cast wants the same returns that fans keep asking for. He said the wish list from viewers matches the cast’s own hopes for future episodes.

Moments that kept the room laughing

The panel also delivered several comic moments that fit the show’s style. Bayer joked that Chalke was the most accident-prone person she knows, and Chalke then revealed she had broken her finger just days before filming began.

Chalke said she tried to casually mention the injury at brunch, but a waiter then tripped and spilled food and drinks onto her table. The cast quickly agreed that the mishap felt very much in line with the show’s long-running chaos.

Flynn also used the stage to correct one of the series’ old wardrobe jokes. He said the Janitor’s outfit is not a jumpsuit, but “a shirt and pants,” drawing laughs from the audience.

Why Scrubs still matters to fans

Reyes offered one of the night’s most moving moments when she described meeting a young fan who said Scrubs helped him through a difficult period. The fan also had an “I’m no Superman” tattoo inspired by the show’s theme song, and the room erupted when he stood up in the audience to show it.

That reaction reflected the deeper appeal of Scrubs, which built its reputation on quick jokes, awkward humor, and scenes that could turn unexpectedly sincere. The panel underscored how the series still connects with viewers who see parts of their own lives in its stories.

The Scrubs season finale airs on ABC on April 15, and the PaleyFest reunion made clear that interest in the revival remains strong as the cast and creators look ahead to what may come next.
