One of the most eye-catching contests is Gael Monfils against Camilo Ugo Carabelli, a meeting that combines experience, emotion, and current clay-court momentum. The Frenchman remains one of the sport’s most popular figures, but the Argentine enters as the steadier option on the surface and the stronger recent performer.
Monfils faces a tough clay test
Monfils is playing in what is being described as his farewell season, which adds significance to every appearance he makes in Madrid. He has spent 15 years at the Caja Mágica and reached the quarter-finals there twice, but his recent results at the event have not matched those peaks.
His overall record in the last 52 weeks has also been limited, with six wins during that stretch, which reflects the physical and competitive demands he has faced at this stage of his career. That reality makes this opener difficult, especially against an opponent who has been much more active on clay this season.
Ugo Carabelli brings better clay form
Ugo Carabelli has built a strong case through his results on dirt in 2026. Six of his eight wins this season have come on clay, and that consistency has been backed by a semi-final run in Marrakech and a last-16 finish in Barcelona last week.
That level of form matters in Madrid, where the altitude can speed up the court but does not remove the need for patience, movement, and repeatable rallies. Ugo Carabelli has been the more competitive player on this surface, and that makes him the more reliable pick despite Monfils’ experience and the emotional weight of the match.
Other Day 2 matchups to watch
Pablo Carreno Busta also enters with questions after recent fitness problems and a difficult Madrid record. The Spaniard has lost his last six opening-round matches at the event, and he retired mid-match in Barcelona qualifying last week, which leaves Marton Fucsovics with a legitimate path through.
Fucsovics does not arrive in perfect form either, but he has the edge in the only previous meeting between the two and appears healthier heading into this clay-court battle. Carreno Busta’s home-crowd support will matter, yet his injury cloud makes this a risky spot for a player still trying to rebuild after a long setback.
Nicolai Budkov Kjaer presents a different kind of challenge to Reilly Opelka, because the qualifying winner showed clean, aggressive tennis to reach the main draw. Opelka’s serve remains a major weapon, especially at Madrid’s altitude, but clay continues to expose the limits of his movement and rally tolerance.
The Norwegian looks better suited to extended exchanges and already proved his comfort level by coming through qualifying without losing a set. That gives him a realistic chance to offset Opelka’s free points and make this one uncomfortable for the American.
Alexei Popyrin also enters with form concerns after a difficult stretch on the main tour. His clay opener in Monte Carlo ended in a straightforward loss to Casper Ruud, and his broader season has not produced much momentum going into Madrid.
Martin Damm, by contrast, arrives as a qualifier with confidence after making a semifinal run in Montpellier earlier in the year. The 22-year-old’s game is still developing, but his ball-striking and recent qualifying run suggest a player capable of taking advantage if Popyrin again struggles to find rhythm on clay.
Day 2 outlook
Madrid’s conditions can blur the gap between power hitters and clay specialists, but the opening round still rewards players who are fit, settled, and comfortable in longer exchanges. That is why Ugo Carabelli, Fucsovics, Budkov Kjaer, and Damm all emerge as live options on a day that should offer several tight matches.
