Star Wars: The Acolyte has found its way back into Disney Plus’ Top 10 TV Shows chart, and the timing has caught attention. The series had already been cancelled after one season, but its unexpected reappearance has revived discussion around whether Lucasfilm could ever revisit the story.
The move does not confirm a renewal, but it has given supporters fresh hope. For a show that drew a sharply divided reaction, its renewed visibility suggests interest may not be as gone as some thought.
A surprise return to the chart
As spotted by CBR, The Acolyte recently appeared again on Disney Plus’ Top 10 TV Shows list. The series was placed ninth, which makes the comeback notable for a show that first arrived with heavy debate around it.
That renewed traction may be linked to Maul – Shadow Lord, which currently sits at the top of Disney Plus’ TV chart and also led the overall streaming chart yesterday, 22 April. If viewers drawn in by Maul – Shadow Lord are also checking out The Acolyte, it could point to a wider Star Wars audience still willing to revisit the series.
Why The Acolyte stood out in the first place
The Acolyte set itself apart by exploring The High Republic, an era that had not previously been shown in live-action Star Wars. It also introduced new central characters, including Mae and Osha, both played by Amandla Stenberg.
The show also included a brief finale cameo from Yoda, but its biggest focus stayed on its original characters and setting. That approach gave the series a different identity from many other Star Wars projects, even if it did not connect with every viewer.
Mixed reaction, then cancellation
The series landed to an extremely mixed response, and not all of the criticism was about the storytelling itself. Much of the backlash also turned abusive, with Stenberg targeted by hate for being a biracial female lead in a franchise as large as Star Wars.
Despite that, there were also viewers who simply did not enjoy the show as a piece of entertainment, which is a normal reaction for any major franchise release. The bigger problem for the series was the combination of online noise and average ratings relative to its production budget, which led to cancellation after one season.
Why the comeback matters now
The Acolyte’s return to Disney Plus’ rankings has helped reignite the #RenewTheAcolyte campaign on social media. Some fans argue the show deserved more time, while others believe the platform may have released it into a crowded moment for Star Wars content.
One viewer posted, “It’s not surprising. It was a really good show,” while another said, “That’s because it’s good. Worth the rewatch and deserved a second season.” A third joked, “Somehow, The Acolyte returned.”
For now, the chart rebound is more of a signal than a guarantee. But if viewing interest keeps growing, it would strengthen the case for Lucasfilm and Disney to reconsider the project in some form, whether that means a new season or even a one-off follow-up that ties up unresolved threads.
What could still be answered
The series left behind several open questions that fans continue to discuss. Among them are how Qimir found the Knights of Ren, what happened between Qimir and Vernestra, and the larger story around Darth Plagueis the Wise.
Those unanswered points have become part of the appeal for supporters who still want continuation. With D23 set to run from 14 to 16 August, Disney will have another public stage to outline its broader plans, and renewed interest in The Acolyte may keep the conversation alive until then.
