Tennessee basketball landed one of the transfer portal’s most sought-after names when Wake Forest guard Juke Harris announced his commitment on May 4. Harris said in an Instagram video, “I decided to go back to school. It’s going to look a little different this time.”
The 6-foot-7 sophomore drew major attention in the portal and also considered the NBA draft before choosing the Vols. North Carolina and Michigan were among the programs that pursued him, but Tennessee ultimately secured a player who produced at a high level for Wake Forest.
Why Harris stood out
Harris posted strong numbers last season and ranked among the nation’s most productive scorers. He averaged 21.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 35 games while shooting 44.4% from the field and 33.2% from 3-point range.
His scoring volume also separated him from many portal targets. Harris finished sixth nationally in total points scored, placed in the top 15 in points per game, scored at least 20 points in 20 games and recorded three 30-point outings.
That production made him a clear fit for teams looking for an immediate offensive impact. Tennessee added him as another experienced option in a portal class built to reshape the roster quickly.
Tennessee’s portal haul keeps growing
Harris becomes the seventh player Tennessee has brought in from the transfer portal since the season ended. The group also includes California guard Dai Dai Ames, Notre Dame forward Jalen Haralson, Belmont guard Tyler Lundblade, VCU guard Terrence Hill Jr., Loyola Chicago center Miles Rubin and Kennesaw State forward Braeden Lue.
That level of activity shows how aggressively Tennessee has approached roster building through the portal. It also gives the staff multiple new pieces across the backcourt and frontcourt as the program prepares for its next step.
A familiar recruiting profile
Harris was already known to Tennessee recruiting circles long before this commitment. The Salisbury, North Carolina, native starred at Salisbury High School and entered the 2024 class as a four-star prospect and the No. 9 overall player in North Carolina, according to the 247Sports Composite.
His recruitment drew interest from several major programs. Kansas, Virginia, NC State, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M all extended power conference offers, and Tennessee offered him as well before he took an official visit on Oct. 15, 2022.
That earlier connection helps place this portal win in a longer recruiting story. Harris now returns to a Tennessee opportunity after becoming one of the most productive scorers available in the transfer market.
