Two pedestrians, including a 9-year-old boy, were seriously hurt after being hit by a vehicle in Salida on Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Magnolia and Broadway avenues, a marked crosswalk where the two were walking.
CHP said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The woman was taken to Memorial Medical Center, while the child was transported to Doctors Medical Center for treatment.
What CHP said happened
According to the report, the vehicle was traveling westbound on Broadway at about 35 mph as it approached Magnolia. The driver did not see the pedestrians in the crosswalk, CHP said.
The man behind the wheel was not injured and remained at the scene to answer questions. CHP also said he was determined not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Crosswalk crash draws attention to pedestrian safety
The incident is another reminder of how quickly a routine crossing can turn dangerous, even in a marked crosswalk. In this case, CHP’s account points to visibility and driver awareness as the key factors in the collision.
Both victims were taken to hospitals promptly after the crash, and officials said their injuries were serious but not expected to be fatal. The investigation details released so far focus on the location, the driver’s direction of travel, and the fact that the pedestrians were already in the crosswalk when they were struck.
