Microsoft is preparing a long-awaited fix for one of Teams’ most frustrating weak spots: slow, heavy, or failed Office file previews. The update is aimed at making it quicker and more dependable to open documents inside Teams without needing to launch the full app.
That matters because Teams has become a daily workspace for receiving, checking, and sharing documents. When a preview stalls, the simplest part of the workflow becomes the part that holds everything up.
A more consistent preview experience
The change focuses on standardizing how Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files are previewed in Teams. Microsoft wants the experience to feel faster and more reliable, especially when users only need to view a file rather than open it fully.
The biggest practical improvement should be reduced loading time. Microsoft is also looking to cut down on cases where previews take too long to appear or fail to load entirely.
Long-standing complaints from users
Problems with file previews in Teams have been a familiar complaint for a long time. Users have reported slow opening times, heavy resource use, and preview panes that sometimes do not appear at all.
For workers who rely on Teams to handle everyday collaboration, those delays can be especially disruptive. A document preview is often the first step before downloading, editing, or sending a file onward.
Focused on the files people use most
The update targets the Office formats most commonly used in office environments. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are the files most often exchanged in chats, team channels, and routine collaboration.
Microsoft says support will not arrive in exactly the same way across every platform. PowerPoint and Excel previews will be available on iOS and Android, while Word preview will initially be limited to iOS.
That means Android users will not get the new Word preview experience at launch. iPhone and iPad users, by contrast, will receive the broadest early coverage for the Office preview update.
Desktop and mobile, but not with identical rollout
Microsoft also says the update is coming to both desktop and mobile. Even so, the exact feature availability will still depend on platform-specific support.
This approach suggests that the company is rolling out the improvement in stages rather than making every preview available everywhere at once. The result should still be a more uniform experience than the one many users have dealt with so far.
No admin action required
The deployment process is meant to be simple for IT teams. Microsoft says the feature will arrive automatically and will not require administrator intervention.
Users also will not need to turn on a special setting to use it. Once the update reaches a device, the new preview experience will be applied right away.
That automatic model should make adoption easier for organizations managing many devices. It reduces configuration work and helps the update spread with minimal disruption.
Microsoft expects the feature to reach user devices no later than the end of June 2026. Until then, Teams users can watch for the rollout as it approaches their devices.
