Two-Way Time Could Reshape Einstein-Rosen Bridges, And Recast Black Hole Information

What many people imagine as a cosmic shortcut is not what Einstein-Rosen bridges were originally meant to be. Newer interpretation places the structure in a very different light: not as a tunnel for travelers, but as a way to understand space-time itself more consistently.

The popular idea of a wormhole often suggests instant travel across galaxies or even a route to the past. But the concept introduced by Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen in 1935 was not proposed as a cosmic transportation system, and it was never intended as a practical path through the universe.

A bridge meant for consistency, not travel

The original Einstein-Rosen bridge emerged from the effort to keep general relativity and quantum mechanics compatible. That makes the idea far more foundational than the science-fiction image usually attached to it.

In general relativity, such a bridge also would not remain open long enough for anything to pass through. The structure would collapse too quickly, leaving no usable passage behind.

Time in two directions

A newer approach developed with Sravan Kumar and João Marto reframes the bridge as a kind of mirror for space-time. In that picture, one side shows time flowing forward, while the other side reflects time moving backward.

This interpretation is not presented as pure speculation. On microscopic scales, the laws of physics do not always clearly distinguish between the past and the future, so both directions of time may need to be included in a quantum description to keep it consistent.

Why this matters for black holes

The idea also offers a possible way to think about the information paradox in black holes. In 1974, Stephen Hawking showed that black holes emit heat and eventually evaporate, which seems to suggest that information about what falls in could be erased.

If time has two directions, that information does not truly disappear. It simply flows away from the direction we experience, then reappears along the opposite time direction.

A different view of the Big Bang

The reinterpretation reaches beyond black holes and into the earliest history of the universe. In this framework, the Big Bang does not have to be treated as the absolute beginning, but as a quantum transition from a universe that was previously contracting.

That idea also leaves room for a possible link between dark matter and remnants of small black holes from the pre-Big Bang phase. If that model proves correct, traces of an earlier cosmic history may still be present in forms that are not fully understood yet.

The result is not a machine for time travel or a shortcut between stars. It is a more structured way to think about gravity, quantum mechanics, and the possibility that time itself can flow in two opposite directions.
